the fact that "social justice warrior" is considered by some a derogatory phrase is rather strange. justice refers to truth, reason, law, and secondarily, morality. all of which seems like things we would want applied to each other, right? even nazis expect social justice amongst one another.

we might as well start insulting our peer's interest in our well-being by calling them friends.

@wxl If you want to really want to get into the mind warp, look at the federalist and the anti-federalist history. Where the two groups are actually named the inverse of what they actually were.

@wxl I think the derision comes from the comparison to a superhero coming to save the day! never fear, SJW is here!
While there definitely are certain things that can definitely be right or wrong, there are many other things that are subjective based on your culture or your personal point of view. We can all agree that murder is generally bad, but some lesser issues may be up for debate.

@cc can we all agree that murder is wrong? what about cultures that practice cannibalism? from what i learned in anthropology it's best not to judge a culture based on our own norms, and that includes those cultures.

ignoring that fact, the internet forces us to mix cultures in a way we really never have. it's not like immigrants coming to another country where they need to assimilate. in this case, no one compromises. what do we do then?

@wxl warrior for social justice and Social Justice Warrior are two different things. Both labels, but only one is a brand identity or even subculture in its own right. When capitalized, many of your descriptors cease to apply - most notably 'reason' and 'law'.

@awesome the two phrases literally mean the same thing. that's the real issue. it's not an insult.

@awesome capitalizing a phrase and using that to justify a completely different meaning has nothing to do with meaning, semantics, pragmatism, phoentics, or any other part of linguistics. it's like re-appropriation.

@wxl while i have no problem with a lot of modern social justice concepts....I think morality, truth, and law are all perspectives and not necessarily solidified except by governmental codifications.

@samrocksc couldn't agree with you more, but i think that's perhaps a bit besides the point.

@wxl I think that the real problem is that in the same way that most good people agree with feminists, but don't like the vocal violent minority of extremists that use the label "feminist", so it is with social justice warriors.

All [most] of us want social justice, but there are some people who disagree with the methods and vocal extremism that some people use while labeling themselves "social justice warriors".

@awilfox yeah i get the idea, honestly. i just think it's a really silly use of words. just being another pedantic jerk, i gues. :)
