Why is it that so many on the Left think that supporting Assad is 'anti-Imperialism'?

It is not just that people themselves think 'my enemy's enemy is my friend' but that various Left organizations use this psychological/sociological phenomena to attract support when they themselves have strange connections to these authoritarian regimes. And why would anyone in 2018 think that Putin is a progressive force in the world today?!

This question is not only based on the current question of chemical weapons being used in Syria, but in general for a few years now. And how these people have filled a void in the West which has seen its once vibrant antiwar movement shrink to almost nothing today.

Your deep thoughts on this?...
