@jd @Algot I'm not sure if something like that *can* be copyrighted as if you knew the source equation it should theoretically be possible to regenerate it on a variety of maths/graphing software.. (if any #maths genuises see this and know what the source equations are I'm sure lots of folk would be interested to learn more though!)

@vfrmedia @Algot Nice point Alex, but still a) knowing the source would mean I could discover the credibility of what the image tells us (how it was made, or true) and b) maybe this person makes other cool gifs and it would be nice to discover more.

Considering the maker did not put a url on it or even a Β©, s/he probably intended to release it into the wild, meaning it is almost like , etc without saying so - (or so I hope).

@jd @Algot TBH I see a lot of cool pics like this but without the original source or info on how they were made and think this is a pity as it would also be a very good way of learning about the #maths behind them (I am not that good at maths but find it easier to grasp concepts when graphics are used to illustrate them)

@vfrmedia @jd @Algot Unfortunately, under the Berne Convention, anything that is published is copyrighted by default unless the agency publishing it is mandated to put it into the public domain (such as NASA). This is a big problem for sharing online.

Regarding #maths, here is an animation of a clothoid I put on #Wikipedia whose curvature increases linearly with distance along the spiral. CC-BY-SA. mastodon.org.uk/media/PNWnkyml

very cool, question: Why did you upload it to mastodon.org.uk? so that it would embed, I assume? It wouldn't embed nicely here if you just dropped the link into the post? This is one nice thing about Fb that it handles this nicely now.

@jd @vfrmedia @Algot I didn''t really think about where to embed from and so I used the instance I'm on. I wonder what happens if I use the direct link? Here goes:

upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia

@mkwadee @vfrmedia @Algot

for me it is just a link.

It now occurs to me the potential of thematic mastodon communities based on storage capabilities. If a Math community has an instance of their own for math geeks, they can up the storage to higher amounts. Mine only allows 8megs, for example. Maybe other instances can be designed in similar ways, idk.

@jd @vfrmedia @Algot @admin That's a good idea, also it would be useful if external links were automatically had a thumbnail associated with them, which is the point you were making.
